¿Qué es el bilingüismo?

¿Qué es el bilingüismo? Is it a super power, reserved for geniuses? (¿O ellos tuvieron la suerte de desarrollarlo cuando eran chicos?) Maybe. Pero tal vez es algo diferente también. Maybe it is a chance for me to discover more about myself. Tal vez es una oportunidad para escuchar nuevos tipos de música. Salsa, reggaeton, and cumbia in addition to hip-hop, pop, or rock. Puedo disfrutar la música latina sin entender lo que dicen los cantantes, but I can enjoy it even more when I do understand what they’re saying. Y no solamente por las palabras mismas, aunque me gustaría saber eso. But also to see the way their words connect with the cultures they come from. Las culturas de donde vengo yo. For example, the culture of Cali, Colombia, which is where most of my family lives. La capital de la salsa, donde puedes encontrar la gente bailando a todas horas de la noche.

And then songs like “Cali Pachanguero” or “Oiga, Mire, Vea” will make more sense to me. Tendrán más sentido cuando entiendo “la luz del nuevo cielo” o “la feria para que vea”. Bilingualism doesn’t have to just be auditory though. También puede ser aromático. It can smell like a lush forest, or a delicious meal, or a beautiful flower. Mi bilingüismo huele como los árboles de la Península Olímpica y los del Yunque, Puerto Rico. It smells like my mom’s chicken and hamburgers, and my grandma’s arepas and mazamorra. Y en ese contexto, mi bilingüismo sabe bastante bien también. Mi bilingüismo puede manifestarse como una flora, como mencioné arriba. It can be a tulip that I got from the Mount Vernon festival o puede ser una rosa que compré de un amable latino vendiéndola en los rincones. Mi bilingüismo todavia no es perfecto, but like the forests, the meals, and the flowers, it is something that I appreciate very much y me ayuda a oler y experimentar cosas nuevas. I can understand my bilingualism through sight too. Lo puedo entender por textos así. Texts made up of English y también textos construidos en español. The English ones are honestly easier for me right now. Pero disfruto el reto de leer textos en español. As a philosophy major, I enjoy reading fascinating works about how the world functions.

Y en mi nivel presente de español sería difícil hacer eso, but I know that I can do it if I continue learning. Aparte de leer, puedo ver mi bilingüismo en arte y cultura. It looks like my mom’s Jewish Eastern European heritage and culture y la herencia y cultura caleña de mi papá. And it also looks like the big mix of all cultures which is the United States, una nación con gente y culturas de todas partes del mundo. My bilingualism is also something tactile. Es el lápiz que uso cuando estoy tomando apuntes. And the soreness my hand feels when I write a lot of them. Este dolor no es algo malo. It is like the soreness I feel after going to the gym. Es un símbolo de crecimiento. My bilingualism is also the actual people with whom I interact, both in English and Spanish. Es la fuente de conocer muchos amigos. If I know multiple languages, then I have a much bigger pool of potential friends. Mi bilingüismo táctil es cada objeto que he mencionado antes de esta oración. It is the musicians making English and Spanish music. Los bosques, la comida y las flores. The books and screens that hold different texts. Y las muchas tradiciones que hacen mis dos herencias.

My bilingualism is a part of my identity. Ahora no es perfecto. And it’s not the only thing about me which is not perfect. Pero, como los otros aspectos de mi identidad, yo estoy intentando mejorarlo. And I am very excited about that journey.
